Israeli Dialing Codes Guide for Travelers

A restaurant confirms your reservation by phone. Your hotel sends a local contact number. A family member needs to reach you after you land. The difference between dialing 03 and +972 3 is small, but it decides whether the call connects. This Israeli dialing codes guide gives you the formats that matter before and during your trip.

Israel uses country code +972. When calling an Israeli number from outside the country, use +972 and remove the first zero from the local number. When you are already in Israel and calling a local Israeli number, keep the zero.

The Israeli dialing code format at a glance

Israeli phone numbers usually begin with a trunk prefix, 0, followed by an area code or mobile prefix and the subscriber number. That leading zero is for calls made within Israel. It is not used after the international country code.

For example, a Tel Aviv landline might be written as 03-555-1234. From within Israel, dial it exactly as shown: 03-555-1234. From the United States, Canada, or another country, dial +972 3 555 1234. The same rule applies to mobile numbers. A local mobile number written as 052-123-4567 becomes +972 52 123 4567 when called from abroad.

The safest international format is to save Israeli contacts with +972 in front. Apps such as WhatsApp, messaging services, and most phone address books recognize this format properly, whether you are on Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Calling Israel from the United States and Canada

From a US or Canadian phone, you can normally use either +972 or the international exit code 011 972. For a number displayed locally as 054-555-1234, both of these formats work:

+972 54 555 1234

011 972 54 555 1234

Using +972 is usually easier. On most smartphones, press and hold 0 to enter the plus sign. Do not dial +972 054. The 0 belongs only to the domestic version of the number.

If a call does not connect, first check the number’s format. The most common mistake is leaving the leading zero in place after +972. Also make sure your international calling plan allows outgoing calls to Israel. Hotel phones, office systems, and some travel SIMs can apply their own international dialing rules or charges.

Israeli area codes for landlines

Landline numbers use geographic area codes. You may see them in booking confirmations, business listings, medical offices, tour operators, and local service contacts.

The main Israeli landline area codes are:

  • 02 for Jerusalem and surrounding areas
  • 03 for Tel Aviv and much of the central region
  • 04 for Haifa and northern Israel
  • 08 for southern Israel, including areas around Beersheba
  • 09 for the Sharon region and parts of the northern coastal plain

A landline number may appear with hyphens, spaces, or no punctuation. Those visual differences do not change how you dial it. Focus on the digits. For international dialing, remove only the first 0 from the area code.

Some non-geographic numbers begin with 07 and may be used for internet-based phone services. Their exact call behavior can vary, particularly from foreign networks, so ask the business for a +972-formatted number if you are unsure.

Mobile prefixes in Israel

Israeli mobile numbers generally start with 05, followed by another digit and a seven-digit subscriber number. Common examples include 050, 052, 053, 054, 055, 058, and 059.

It can be tempting to identify a carrier based on the prefix, but that is no longer dependable. Israelis can keep their phone number when changing providers, so a 052 number may not be using the network that originally issued that prefix. For travelers, the practical takeaway is simple: dial every mobile number using the full number, including the 0 when calling within Israel.

A typical local mobile number looks like 050-123-4567. Use +972 50 123 4567 from outside Israel or when saving it in international contact format.

If your prepaid tourist eSIM includes a real Israeli +972 number, share that number in international format with people abroad. They can call or message you without guessing how to rewrite the number. Before distributing it, check your selected plan’s included calling and SMS allowances, since features vary by plan.

How to call within Israel

Calling locally is straightforward. Dial the entire number exactly as it is written, including its first zero. You do not need to add +972 for an ordinary domestic call.

For example, use 02 for Jerusalem landlines, 03 for Tel Aviv landlines, and 05 for mobile numbers. Calling a mobile number from a hotel, business, or another mobile phone uses the same full domestic format.

A few types of numbers deserve extra attention. Toll-free and service numbers can begin with 1-800, while some business service lines use 1-700. These numbers are designed for callers within Israel and may not always work from foreign phone services, roaming lines, or calling apps. If you need to contact an airline, bank, delivery company, or attraction, look for a standard local number as a backup.

For short codes, follow the instructions from the organization that provides them. Short numbers are often used for customer service, public services, and automated messages, but they are not always accessible from every visitor plan or from a phone without local calling capability.

Emergency numbers in Israel

Save emergency numbers before you travel. In Israel, dial 100 for police, 101 for Magen David Adom ambulance and medical emergency services, and 102 for fire and rescue.

These are short local emergency numbers, not +972 numbers. In an urgent situation, call the relevant service directly. If you are unable to communicate clearly, provide your location as precisely as possible. A street address, nearby landmark, hotel name, trail entrance, or highway direction can help responders find you faster.

Phone signal can vary by terrain, building construction, underground spaces, and restricted areas. Do not assume data service or a regular call will be available everywhere, particularly when traveling through remote desert routes or hiking areas. Download maps for offline use, tell someone your plans before heading out, and keep your phone charged.

Set up your phone before departure

The most reliable time to organize contacts is before your flight. Update important Israeli numbers to the +972 format: your accommodation, driver, local host, business contact, travel provider, and any service that may need to reach you. This removes the confusion of switching between domestic and international dialing after arrival.

Also check that your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible if you plan to use a digital plan. With eSIM Israel, you can install a prepaid tourist eSIM by QR code before your trip and arrive ready to connect with a local Israeli number on eligible plans. That can be useful for receiving calls, using local services, and avoiding the search for mobile service after landing at Ben Gurion Airport.

Keep your home number active only if you need it for bank verification or essential messages, and review your carrier’s roaming settings carefully. Incoming calls, voicemail, and background data can create unexpected charges on some home plans. A local prepaid setup gives you clearer control, but you should still understand what is included before placing calls or sending SMS messages.

Quick dialing examples

Here is the rule in its simplest form. If you see an Israeli number beginning with 0 and you are calling from abroad, replace that first 0 with +972. If you are calling from inside Israel, use the number with the 0.

For a Jerusalem number written as 02-555-1234, dial +972 2 555 1234 internationally. For a Haifa number written as 04-555-1234, dial +972 4 555 1234. For a local mobile written as 054-555-1234, dial +972 54 555 1234 from outside Israel.

A correctly saved +972 contact is one less thing to troubleshoot when you are trying to find your driver, confirm a reservation, or coordinate with family. Set up the numbers before you go, and your phone will feel useful from the moment you arrive.
